Leaving Peru with a bike

I'm set to leave Lima, Peru with a bike I purchased here. The only problem is that JetBlue doesn't know if I can do it or not. When I spoke with a rep today she said I'm the first one to fly JetBlue wanting to leave Lima with a bike--it's a new city from them. She did say if it's cool with the airport then it's cool with JetBlue. This doesn't instill a lot of confidence in me. I would hate to have to abandon a bike at the airport because of a misunderstanding.

JetBlue's web site states:
Bicycles will be accepted in a hard-sided, padded case designed for bicycles. If not in a hard-sided case, bikes will be accepted with the handle bars secured sideways and pedals removed. The bicycle must also be encased in plastic foam, a cardboard box (domestic flights only), or similar material to prevent damage.
I don't have a hard case, nor do I want to shell out for one. A cardboard box seems to be out of the question but plastic foam is just dandy?! Or similar material? What?

Does anyone have any experiencing leaving Lima with a bike? On JetBlue?
