Since this thread popped up again- not that it's in the original premise- I was surprised by this:

I have a 1986 Schwinn Voyageur, I had acquired an Avocet wheelset with a 5 Speed Suntour Winner FW- something like 14-34.

When I was building it for myself, I put on a set of Suntour XC Comp derailleurs.

Since I'm building it to sell it- I put on some 6sp DuraAce 7401 shifters and immediately set it to friction- because I knew it wouldn't index.

Last week I had it on the stand and just for giggles, I set it to SIS- and it indexes PERFECTLY.

Suntour Perfect 5 Speed FW
+ Suntour XC Comp RD
+ DuraAce 7401 shifters.

= MAGIC
