It is NOT against eBay policy to accept checks or money orders.
Jim, check my link above if you want. Current policy does not allow MOs or cashier checks on bikes, except for local pickup.

As far as paypal or ebay myself, I have regularly supported ebay and paypal on this forum, as it has allowed me to sell a lot of non-bike stuff at full market prices. Do I wish it was cheaper? Sure. But all of my other options cost more, or result in lower price.

From ebay's policy page: "Make sure your listing follows these guidelines. If it doesn't, it may be removed, and you may be subject to a range of other actions, including limits of your buying and selling privileges and suspension of your account."

On the not allowed list:
"Sending cash through the mail
  • Sending cash or money orders through instant, point-to-point cash transfer services (that are not banks) such as Western Union or MoneyGram
  • Mailing checks or money orders (except for items in categories specifically permitted)"

Specifically permitted list is the one I referred to above: ebay motors, business and industrial, real estate
