I said "Yeah. We're making sure he has working brakes." A little while later he said "No, really. There's no point in even putting brakes on. He's gonna take them off as soon as he gets the bike." I said "But it's going to start out with brakes." He tried it one more time and I said "Dude. I don't care if he takes the brakes off as soon as the bike goes through the door to the parking lot and he borrows a wrench from us to do it. No bike is leaving my shop unless it's safe to ride and that includes brakes. Now, you can help me adjust these and finish up the bike or I can find something else for you to do." And what do you know? The homeless friend actually decided he liked being able to stop and he kept the brakes on. I told them this story at my interview on Monday and I said "Some things I just don't compromise on. Safety is one of them." So, they know what they're getting into by hiring me. Technically though I guess it's really Lester's bike shop not mine. I just kind of forget that sometimes when I'm cracking the whip.
There is someone else on these forums who either has just gone through a stint or is still doing one with a big box store. If I can dredge up his name, I'll let you know so you can compare notes.

Now, what's your assembly skill at setting up gym equipment?
