I got side-swiped by the city bus in January, and my bike was deemed "Unsafe to ride" by a couple of bike shops (but it's all I've got, so I gotta stick with it until I can replace it). FL drivers are as bad as they say. Nobody follows the 3-feet rule to pass. I'm lucky to get 6 inches most of the time
A mountain or commuter shoe with a recessed cleat will be fine to walk around in all day. May feel a bi stiffer in the sole then a normal sneaker would, but should be fine.
