Don't know for sure. Looks like you use the smooth nut when you want to insert it in a friction fit cable stop and throw it away if your stop is threaded. Does that make sense? If the stop is threaded, you get rid of the end piece and just thread in the adjuster part with the spring.
That's what I'm thinking. I want to just slide them in, so that they're removable easily (for the reasons set forth here
