Can I respectfully suggest that you wear street shoes to retrieve the bike, then put on the cycling shoes when you are ready to ride? If you really need to wear the shoes in the mud, you may want to consider MTB pedals like Eggbeaters. These are popular cyclocross pedals partly because of the way they handle mud.
