Its all in good discussion and maybe an eye opener for some. Its easy for bike enthusiast getting sentimental but there's truth in a business model of buying and selling for a profit by scrapping. You can turn a dollar much faster than piddling with it. I've done it on absurdly expensive auto and heavy equipment parts. Perfectly good brand new OE parts sold for scrap. $15 turbos that retailed for $2500. Radiators for $100 that retailed for $3k to a high of $12k... yep add the zeros. Market saturation and no demand. Follow the metal trends and sometimes its best to dump it.
Back to bikes: I've been tempted on a few occasions by finding clearance bikes at a Walmart or Target for pittance. Usually going into the late Fall season they'll dump them. I've walked by small lots of bikes for $35 to $50 brand new bikes - kids to adult type. Makes one take a second thought before jumping into the scrap heap.
