Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

You can still do without it and just silicone glue or double face tape the guide in place. Don't seal the hole. Any tramp water that gets into the frame via the seat tube, etc should have a place to let it escape. Many frames have a second hole in the bb shell beside the guide screw one just as a water drain.
