S+S couplers.
I too travel quite a bit and have rented bikes in many places. It's hit or miss. Sometimes there are ok bikes to rent, some times there aren't. Some times there are but the LBS that rents them is on the other side of the city from where I'll be and it's not so easy to get over there.
I came very close to pulling the trigger on a Bike Friday last year, but then I got injured and was out for the whole season. If I ever recover my fitness (I'm on the way but I have a LONG way to go), I will likely strongly consider it.
