If a bead starts to get tight, I don't bother with the thumbs. It's out with the lever and presto, it's done. It does help to ensure the tube is properly inside the casing and the lever doesn't get caught on it. But the idea that all tyres have to be put on by hand and thumbs is overrated by people who want to hold on to their manhood.
