I've ridden some bikes equipped with bad brakes in the past that have required a death grip but the problem has always been with the brake itself and not the type of brake. I have a touring bike that comes close to your gross vehicle weight and I've never had a problem doing a 2 finger (again, the little and ring finger) stop at all kinds of speeds and conditions. That includes 50 mph rainy downhills.
