I don't know; when I first got back into cycling as an adult, around the turn of the century, discs were seemingly gaining some traction in the market pretty fast. I thought they were the coolest thing on Earth, but my retrodork friends (imagine what retrodorks were like 13 years ago!! Hint-- almost exactly the same as they are now) tried earnestly to dissuade me for a pile of practical reasons. Ultimately, I passed b/c they were expensive and I was broke, but looking back, all of their practical reasons made a lot of sense. Y2k-era discs were pretty grim.

Fast-forward to the modern era: discs have improved a lot, especially in terms of practicality. The prices are more sensible, and I have a lot more money to blow on bike stuff. (Truly cheap disc calipers were rare back then, and disc-ready frames and hubs seemed so expensive to me BITD!) I still think discs look cool, but mostly insofar as I think disc-only rims look much better than rim-brake compat hoops. And y'know what? I'm still rejecting disc bakes b/c they still seem overpriced and impractical, relative to decent rim brakes. ( I also think that coaster and drum hubs, laced into disc rims, look cool too. So what do I know?)
