I'm somewhat amazed that the thread has gotten this many replies without someone chiming in with the uselessly true answer "about $500!"

I think in general, beyond $700, the increase in price is related to a decrease in weight, with fancier lighter-weight components. $700 should get you a perfectly good bicycle that will last you a lifetime.
