Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

Easy fix, shift to high and put the chain on the smallest rear sprocket. Most experienced riders try to remember to shift to high before removing the wheel because it maximizes freewheel/RD clearance. But if they forget, they shift to high to install for the same reason.

Some bikes may have a screw or something else sticking out and interfering with installing the wheel with the chain on the smallest sprocket. This is rare, but if it's an issue on yours, then always install wheels in the 2nd high gear.
