I was thinking of doing this but I haven't yet looked up how to take them apart. If you say they aren't hard, then it's worth looking into.

Follow up question!

IF this Nexus hub works, I have a bit of a conundrum. I currently have a tandem bike with a new SA 3-speed up with a coaster brake. My girlfriend and I (combined 270 pounds) ride it around town. IF the Nexus hub works, which would be a better hub for the tandem, the SA or the Nexus? It would be really nice to have the 8 speeds on the Tandem, but my gut tells me that fitting 8 speeds into essentially the same space necessitates smaller, more easily worn and broken parts, which wouldn't be good for the extra weight. Thoughts?

EDIT: Hmm a quick search seems to turn up some disappointing info. The 8-speeds, particularly the earlier ones, are not so reliable: http://www.bikeforums.net/bicycle-me...y-8-speed.html

Makes me think that if it wound up in a bin of hubs, it's quite possible that it's kaput.
