How do I best dull down polished alloy components.

I just purchased a seat post for a 30 year old bike with a lot of work to do, I have ditched everything aside form the frame, it was all very rusty. The problem is that I got a new seat post that I want to dull down to match the non polished stem and Weinmann brakes. I thought about scouring pot scrubbers, fine sand paper, is there something I have not thought of?
I do not like polished stuff on my old bikes, think it sticks out like a sore thumb.
Suggestions please?
