I like this quote by William Morris: "If you want a golden rule that will fit everybody, this is it: have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."
I think it's important to not get too hung up on an object's utility without giving any consideration to its beauty. I'd like to think that Mr. Morris would agree with me.
I agree with your sentiment, especially regarding buildings. I have been in the construction industry for nearly 30 years. I live in St. Louis where we have a wealth of amazing brick buildings downtown. In fact, a few years ago I hosted a trolley tour of downtown St. Louis for the International Concrete Repair Institute. The organization is made up of manufacturers, architects, engineers, contractors and owners. I researched a couple dozen buildings and the trolley drove to the buildings while I narrated. I learned a lot in my preparation and it was fun to hear the comments about the structures. The old buildings just have character. I love many modern structures too, but most don't make me look twice. Sure, the older buildings aren't as safe, green, etc. but many are still with us and certainly much loved. I see lots of parallels to the bike industry...
