I live 7 blocks from the keystone trail, in Omaha Nebraska. Over the last 23 years I have rehabbed bad knees, ridden several bikes, commuted, gone to the grocery store, trained for coast to coast & golf to the Canadian border bicycle rides. I have enjoyed several forms of wildlife. I watched twin fawns grow up over a summer, totally undisturbed by the trail users, Only a block away from their playground. All of these things I have seen from the right side of the trail, I have gently used the grass beside the trail hundreds of times. I understand the trails were built with federal highway funds for non motorized transportation . Something Over 150 mi. of trails in Omaha are administered by the Parks and Recreation Department. We have murals painted under some bridges, (blind spots). We have (blind corners) one has been the seen of two crashes resulting in broken bones. I have never seen any signage explaining that all users should use the right side of the trail, and no encouragement to moving off the trail when not moving. To the south of Omaha is a connecting trail administered by Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District. This trail has signs explaining ( keep to the right and allow room for other users) ( pull off the trail when stopped or resting) Omaha trails pass threw residential arias where mothers often take infants for stroller rides on the trail, two at a time, both sides of the trail are blocked. This may not be a problem when a person can see for a city block, but there are not warning signs at the blind spots. This situation has always made me uncomfortable. My retirement job is driving a special needs school bus, I have taken brain injured children from tax funded group homes to OPS school, where feeding tubes are serviced, dippers changed and some training is attempted. After a breef talk with a Parks representative with my pictures and 23 yrs. Experience, I saw no interest in new signage, but a disparaging statement about Lance Armstrong wannabe. I have no control over either situation, I feel that if the city of Omaha can spend 2 (two) million dollars for trucks to paint over graffiti, a few hundred for signed to inform parents and other casual trail users would be a very wisely spent trifle.
