The patella doesn't seem to slide along the bone correctly like the right one does. When I do a leg extension sitting down with the left leg, there is a very pronounced click in the left knee that does not exist in the right knee.

your the opposite of me. My right had a smaller vmo, and the vmo, and the timing of its firing will determine if your patella tracks correctly. I used to be able to crack my right knee all the time! After hitting the gym for the vmo ( peterson step ups and bulgarian squats and light leg extensions) no more clicking.
I have no pain but my bad tracking knee still feels kinda stiffer, kinda numb, but not too bad. I also use a bauerfiend genutrain brace, which helps. You gotta beef those vmos up,
