From what I understand, there was quite a few deaths at the track due to its high speeds. The owner of the track did not want to make changes to the track like escape lanes and such that would make it safer so it went bankrupt after races where pulled from the track. The property sat unused for a long time and many who grew up here tell me they would bring 4x4 vehicles to the track at night and party and run the bank turns.
