I too built my current ride from the frame up and, likely, saved a negative $200 in doing so (over that of a complete bike). But, I wanted to do a "frame up" project. This, of course, also allowed me to select the parts according to use (single speed CX and gravel bike). To me this hobby/sport is more about having fun than it is about saving money.
