If you buy a cheapie, you're going to spend a fair amount of money upgrading it. Better to buy a quality bike, unless you're a total beginner (then your first bike should be cheap).

My Scott CR1 cost almost 2k but I've made absolutely no upgrades, except to buy Bontrager hardcase tires. Quality is well worth the cost.
