d'oh, wish i replied before you went through all that trouble. The best thing to use is actually a butter knife dipped in goof off. Work from the edge of the rim, and the gunk comes off, well, like hot knife through butter. I'm going through something similar right now as the valve on my tubular is fubared

Also, re: applying glue on top of a glue/solvent mix, of what do you think tubular glue is comprise? Hint: find a tube of mastik and read the labels.
