42mph on the flat. This number came from the cop who caught me on radar and called it out of the window as I blew past. Gale-force tailwind. I could have gone faster except I had run out of gears.

Downhill: 53mph coming down Highwood pass in Alberta. No tucking required. The road had been cleared of snow, but not yet opened for cars. Huge tailwind, and being at 7,000 ft helps. Despite the absence of vehicles, I still scared myself. At the warp speed part of the descent, I vaguely picked out a brown object on the right shoulder. It was behind me before I could formulate any kind of avoidance plan. It turned out to be an large elk, which could have simply bounded out on the the road in front of me.
