It sure looks like it would work if the stop screw were backed out enough. How much clearance do you have between the chainrings and the chainstay? Is it possible that you have too much clearance (BB axle too long or square in crank not fitting fully on BB square)? What does your bike mechanic say? He has the advantage of seeing it first-hand.
