Eon agos, I repainted my Frejus (when t was nowhere near a classic yet) and removed the badge to do so. I replaced is using No.2 brass screws and nuts. When finished I need to use a half round file to thin the nut slightly inside the head tube so the fork cleared. I ride it for decades after than it still looks as good as new, and unless you look closely, it's hard to notice the slot in the screw head.
