About a year and a half ago I picked up a 1982 Specialized Allez, or so the Criaigslist ad said, for $120. It's rough in that it has some bubbled paint and rust damage. Had my LBS look it over and they said the rust wasn't structurally significant, that it looked much worse than it actually was. Because of the rust, the only real problem was that one of the cable guides came off during the first tune up I had my LBS.
Didn't think much about all of this, after the tune up it rode great and I've put hundreds on it. About 6 months after I bought it, I started researching original components and learned about the reputation of the Konno built frames, and that his shop built many Allez frames.
I've looked at many comparison photos and am pretty sure I've got a Konno.
- Size stamped on bottom of BB
- Long, thin lugs
- Offset fork crown
- Campagnolo dropouts
All along I've been thinking of have it sand/media blasted and repainted, but now that I think it's a Konno built Allez, I have a few questions for this forum I'm hoping I can get some input on...
- Can the braze on cable guide on the top tube be replaced?
- Where can I get replacement decals?
- Should I just do nothing reconstructive and just sell to an aficionado?
Thanks in advance!
