Ridding down steep curvy descents be dangerous when your tires are less than an inch wide.
Doesn't sound like wider tires would have let you stop any quicker since the possibility of a pitch-over was the limiting factor in how hard you could brake. Glad that you had left a safe distance behind the van even though it was less safe than you thought.
