If you check on CL, there's a guy in Sunnyvale selling a Trek FX 7.7 for $1100 (doesn't list what year). He's listed it for quite a while now, so maybe you can talk him down to $900.

If you're looking at drop-bar bikes, there's a larger offering of nice bikes in your price range, either used or a remaining 2013 model new bike. Or you could get a new 2014 Trek for around $850 (which will be just over $900 with tax); that would get you an aluminum frame and carbon fork, and the Shimano Sora group set.
