I also had an issue with my Garmin soft strap. Called Garmin, spoke to a rep. and was sent a new strap and sending unit FREE.
I wet my chest and run the contact pads under warm water before putting on. Rinse after every ride, blow out snaps and hang to dry. Once a month a little wash with soap.
