If I recall ok from the few FW I've scattered around on the bench that sounds like the one spring wire on one of the two pawls that provides tension so the pawl is held out against the FW body to engage the ratchet teeth and makem bicycle go.

That makes sense, but note, OP is talking about the pawl springs on a Normandy hub. Which is kind of like talking about the crank shaft on a canoe, or the feathers on a doorbell. Normandy hubs don't have pawl springs. That's because they don't have pawls. My guess is he inadvertently disassembled the freewheel in stead of removing it. Oy!
