What are the rules in the US for camping, anyway? How does one tell whether a park allows camping or not? What about things like parking lots that are empty? Not the most comfy, but if you can park your car there overnight... Is it OK to just ask property owners if you can camp, or best not to do this unless it's the most dire of circumstances? What about land that just appears unoccupied?
