once again...a Dual-Sport or a 29er
Ok so here’s the 411 on my situation, I turned 40 this year and would like to get back into some biking, nothing serious, combination of light trails, gravel roads and paved streets.
I have tried 2 bikes with rigid forks and yes they are faster and lighter and much more responsive than anything with a front suspension…..however, I found them to be very stiff, jarring and borderline uncomfortable on our paved streets filled with cracks and holes (and that’s not gravel or dirt). This is definitely my 40 year old body talking.
So this brings me to looking at “Dual-Sport” bikes and it seems that every manufacturer has one in their catalogue these days.
My question is this, I’m not tiny, I’m 6’3 and 225lbs and from what I’ve seen so far all of the front-suspension on these bikes is manufactured by either SR Suntour or RST Neon, the only exception was the Cannondale CX1 with their “Headshock Fatty DL”.
Can these forks handle my size? Will they just crap out in a few years? Why don’t companies like Fox or RockShox make forks for these bikes?
My budget is between $1000 to $1300 So this leads me to consider a 29er and slapping on some “Dual-Sport” tires. In that price range I found the forks on 29ers to be of much better quality.
My understanding is that the main difference between a 29er and a DS is the geometry, I assume the DS is more comfortable to ride, can you turn a 29er to ride more like a DS?
Would appreciate any feedback on my conundrum….especially from folks who actually ride these 2 types of bikes.
Thanks and my apologies for the long post.
