As you say, the trick to life is to keep moving. I'd say, go one step lower and see how it works. If after you acclimate to the new gears you want to spin faster and go lower, do it. It doesn't cost a huge $$, and it's a lot more fun than having injured knees or having to walk up hills. Do what keeps you moving comfortably.
