T breaking the shifting indicators off isn't a viable option. If I buy some shimano brake levers would the bracket that holds them in place sit under the shifting indicator giving me that half an inch?
No breaking, just unscrewing & removing, getting Shimano brake levers won't make any difference to what you have, as the clamp will be the same thickness.
