Driving through a remote mountain pass I saw that the California DOT was putting one of its solar-powered highway signs to good use. "May is Bike to Work Month - Share the Road" it read. I can only imagine the cyclist midway through his daily 150-mile bike commute over a gnarly mountain pass rolling past that sign. Unfortunately I didn't see a bicycle within about 90 miles in either direction of that sign.

I counted five commuters and six other cyclists on the ride home from work though.
