I haven't noticed any issue with sunscreen and white jerseys. What sunscreen do you use? I have some fairly benign stuff (badger brand or something) that doesn't seem to do anything to my jerseys... yet.

Yeah, wasn't suggesting doing without sunscreen when it's warranted. I simply don't wear any of my white jerseys in the summer time; they are relegated to winter use, when I can wear them with arm warmers or a long sleeve baselayer so that I don't need sunscreen. (Or for night rides.)
Do you have snow where you live? White jerseys can help hide you in the winter against snow covered mountainsides and help keep you cooler (to a point) in the summer. I consider white a summer color.
