Today was, in fact, grand opening day for the store. First of all, I like to think it was because of all the lobbying I did that the Sporting Goods department got any .22 ammo at all. They got eight boxes. Of those, four of the eight were what is called "Not on file" which means the computer couldn't find the UPC- even though all eight boxes were the same brand, size, etc. NOF means you have to remove them from the quivering hands of the customers and get their name and phone number because you are unable to sell them. So, you have given manna to the C of I then snatched it back. There was going to be a problem anyway. Instead of finishing the opening ceremonies and allowing the employees to return to their positions and *then* letting in the customers, the management decided to let the customers in and leave the employees to fend for themselves. Sporting Goods is most of the way to the back of the store and somewhere along the line- maybe they smelled the growing fear on her- the crowd determined that Mikayla was the one in charge of that department and they practically chased her through the store baying at her heels.
I headed back that way too trailed by an old man who was intent on scoring some ammo and several sample packages of Jack Links beef jerky. When I got to Sporting Goods, there were 50 people over there, Mikayla was fumbling with the keys and trying to get the cabinet open while some yahoo was no sh*t breathing down her neck. Steve, who'd had about an hour's experience on a cash register was dithering about whether he should start ringing people up. I said, "Steve! Get in there and save her!" but he just looked at me. Clearly, this called for the Ramona touch.
I said "I want one line starting behind Mikayla and heading back down here past the propane and the bikes." Grumble grumble from the crowd; Nobody moved. I said "Hey! One line! Starting here and going that way. I need this aisle clear for non-ammo customers and everybody else is getting in one line right now." And, by God, they moved and Mikayla took a couple of deep breaths. Steve started ringing people up, I went off and found someone in management to help keep order and someone else to help Steve figure out what the hell he was doing.
Oh, and I sold five bikes today. I also got a chance to clean up and reorganize my assembly area while I listened to the Isley Brothers. Nobody complained that the Isleys said "bullsh*t" in one song.
It was as Ice says "A good day".
