Bikes: Catrike 559 I own some others but they don't get ridden very much.

With all of that in mind, I was hoping someone would be able to advise me if it'd be more beneficial for me to try to repair this bike (which could potentially be a waste of time and money) or if I should buy a used one that I feel would be less problematic. I don't have any knowledge about bike mechanics. However, I am willing to work and learn.
1. How old is "much too old to be riding it"?

2. How could it be a waste of time and money? If you went to school somewhere to learn bike mechanics wouldn't you expect there to be a tuition charge? Fix your dad's bike one problem at a time and chalk up the cost to "tuition".
