Probably the most fun and versatile bike I owned was a Specialized hybrid. It had a thick aluminum frame, lightweight yet hard to break. Wide but smooth Kevlar tires, which were reasonably quick on the road but could go dry off roading too. It had no frame suspension so it was efficient, but it had minor spring cushion in the handlebars and the seatpost, enough to take the jarring bumps out. This is old technology now, but back then it was very practical and hard to beat. Anything extreme in any direction comes with compromise and cost, and I found this bike to be a perfect combination of everything for daily riding.
