Just get a Schlumpf two-speed crankset:

schlumpf innovations

You can get a Mountain Drive, with speed reduction, or High Speed Drive, with overdrive. Ratios up to 2.5:1 are offered. Much cleaner, and no tensioner or derailleur required.
