Holy crap, I just remembered I hit a squirrel on this morning's ride. I always aim right at them because they always reverse direction, except this one outjuked himself and I hit him square with the front tire. Glad he didn't go into the spokes.
I hit one on my TT bike a few weeks back. Same thing.
Usually, they are prey so if you aim for them they will, at the last moment, juke out of the way and run off. This guy was off to the side and when I got close (in the extensions no less) went in front of me. A clench moment for sure, but I think I just got his tail as he wasn't there on my return trip.
