It's a "brave, new world" when it comes to product sourcing. You either go with the flow, else you're history, and likely bummed all the time.
To my way of thinking, it's an opportunity for the shop to win your loyalty ... via selection, service, quality of advice and assistance. I'm all for getting a great price on a product, but not at the expense of failing to be able to support it later. And if I'm in a smaller town with a shop that treats people like lepers for acquiring any goods elsewhere, either (a) the shop needs an attitude adjustment or (b) it's worth tossing a bit of buying their direction so long as they're willing to work with me.
Have lived in a few places where there were a couple of
great shops. Those got nearly all my business, for that simple reason. They had stellar staff, offered great advice and support, had good service, knew what they were doing, never "bubba'ed" an install or fit. And they'd work with you to find what was right, instead of seemingly only pushing what was on the floor. Takes a lot of doing to be that sort of shop.
