I rock a BMX style helmet. I used to do some mountain biking and urban stuff and wanted a helmet I felt more comfortable scuffing up on minor crashes with. Rather roadie helmets scare me more because I worry about dropping them and damaging them (they actually warn against dropping your foam helmets because it can cause small fractures in it), whereas if I drop my hard plastic skater helmet-eh, big deal it just gets a little scuffed.
oh and I hate looking like I just beat up some tri-athlete and jacked his lid when I'm wearing tornup shirts and rolled up jeans.
