PaulRivers....Paul, you quoted me on several things and made some good points but rather than respond to them all I'm going to pick and chose. I think when it comes to the IQ vs. the Core 180 the IQ is likely the better lamp. For me the relative size is not the big issue. Both work on the bars and both are bigger than what I would generally want sitting on my bars. The IQ I think has the better UI AND in this application ( a small self-contained lamp using one emitter(?) ) the IQ should work well ( if you ride in temps above 50°F ). Low self-discharge ( LSD ) Nimh batteries work very well in applications involving low power as long as they don't get too cold. I use them myself in my "every-day-carry" (EDC) pocket torch as well as things like motorized toothbrushes, razors, remote controls, small LED lamps.
I believe it was Tom that mentioned ( in his review ) that the Core 180 worked while charging. Like was said before not much is known about the battery being used and how serviceable it is. I think if I decide to buy one I will send off an e-mail first to the company that makes them and ask a couple questions along this line.
I really didn't want to get into a discussion about Li-ion vs. Nimh batteries but I'll comment a bit. Since the inception of the LSD Nimh cells that were introduced by Sanyo not too many years ago, other companies have followed suit and offered their own brand of LSD cells. This type of cell has helped Nimh battery chemistry regain some popularity. I have the original "Eneloops" cells as well as LSD cells made by Duracell and Energizer. They all work very well in the devices in which I use them.
All said, the bike lighting industry as a whole ( as well as the computer industry ) have switched over and most now use the Li-ion cells to power their products. For the most part the Li-ion chemistry appears to be more practical for higher power applications and that fact alone seems to be universally accepted by the industry as a whole.
Buying good individual Li-ion cells is really not that hard to do. No, you can't buy them at the local Bestbuy or Walmart but you can buy the "Tenergy" brand cell at "Batteries plus", although they will over charge you for them and they won't be the highest capacity made. The best place to get the best variety and best price on Li-ion batteries is on the web. You may have to wait longer to have them shipped but you will have a better choice of brand, capacity and price. ( *If you're willing to have a lamp shipped from overseas this shouldn't be an issue )
A year ago I could of bought two Panasonic 3400 ( non-protected ) cells for $15. They cost a little more now but the deals are still out there if you know where to look. BTW, you can buy self-contained bike lights that use ( user serviceable, user replaceable ) standard Li-ion 18650 cells. The Cygolite Expilion series ( 600 and up ) have switchable batteries. The lower series though ( like the Metro 500 are not switchable). There are others as well, I just can't remember them all.
