As others have pointed out, if you are successfully running a shimano rear derailleur, you won't have any problem replacing it with a modern one. Is the problem the rear derailleur? Are your cables clean and running smoothly? Are the shifters doing their job well? What's the last time you replaced your freewheel and chain?
