Advice/insight needed about internally geared hubs

I have come to accept the reality that even with a 20t gear, my single speed Bendix 70 coaster brake hub on my cruiser just doesn't cut it in hill country around here. I would prefer the overall clean look of not having a gear cluster or derailleur, so I've been looking at internally geared hubs from Shimano and Sturmy Archer to build a new wheel with. I may go to a drum brake up front as well some day, but for now I just want to be able to enjoy riding it.

I'm looking for whichever is the most durable and reliable, and what you guys would recommend for a multi-speed option (3 vs. 5 vs. 8, etc.). I prefer 36h hubs since the cruiser is on the heavy side, and will probably be used to haul stuff around as well.

Thanks!
