The video makes it seem like I do a lot of sidewalk riding. I don't. I just like to cross at certain intersections during rush hour and find it easier and less stressful to take that last block on the sidewalk. Then at the first cross street after the intersection, I'm back on a quiet, less busy street. I usually don't cut through the skate park and along the lake, but it's a nice scenic variation. When I ride through downtown, I never take the sidewalk as they are crowded. I started taking that last sidewalk in the video about ten years ago, after ten years of taking the street there. It is just too busy, with no bike lane and impatient drivers. Going the other direction there is a wide, wide shoulder that makes it easier. The part where I come up behind the pedestrian...Well, every city and commute route has its peculiarities and everyone can make their own judgement (within reason) as to what is safe and prudent.
