^ grayjay, that's basically what i did -- snugged the cones up to the cartridges and then backed them off a bit to ensure the axle would turn perfectly smooth. i wasn't sure how much to back them off, just guessed. but had i snugged the cones all the way, there was too much friction when turning the axle. once the wheel was mounted with the skewer fully loaded, there is no play (like a well adjusted hub), and the wheel spins freely with a touch of a finger. so i'm gonna call this one done.

pretty simple really.

about servicing the cartridges ... i just assumed these were unserviceable, as i tried to find a way to pry the seal, and it wouldn't budge. if i end up keeping the bike, i'll check it again in a few months and maybe take it into the shop and/or buy a new pair of cartridges.

i'm glad i have this new experience under my belt. it should make the next time a lot easier.
